Sleep Training

Mallorie @ Happy Home inspired me to write this quick post. If you have anything else to add, please do! I know the advice will be great for everyone.

It's been two weeks since I went back to work, and I'm getting into a good routine. Don't get me wrong, I think about Preston 24-7, and the first week, I cried on the way to work. It's hard to separate from your child like that and not feel guilty. But, I also have to remember that it's been good for him to gain some independence, hang out with another baby during the day, and it only makes my time with him that much more special. I absolutely love rushing out of my office door to go pick him up and see that beautiful smile when I get to the sitters. Also, for me to be a better Mom, I think working is good.

We have always wanted Preston to sleep in the crib for naps and at night. Sleeping at night has become a great routine and he's been in that crib for eight hours or more every night.

Night time Routine:
*Bath time around 8pm
*Lotion massage / jammies
*Turn out all the lights on the main floor, and feed him 6 1/2 ounces
*He's passed out at this point and we are trying to burp him...burping rarely happens before bedtime.

*Turn on the monitor, the humidifier, say our goodnights, put him down to sleep with his Fisher Price Soothe and Glow Seahorse.

Out like a light!

Daily Nap Time Routine:
*I know the sounds he makes when he's tired, so I can tell when the routine should begin.
*Take him upstairs to the nursery, turn the light on if necessary (so he doesn't think it's night time)
*Turn on a cd with lullabies (low volume).
*Cradle him with him holding his monster rag.
*Get him to fall asleep in my arms, put him down in the crib.
Usually he'll wake up and fuss. I let him fuss for about five to ten minutes to see if he can get himself to sleep. If he's really crying, I pick him up and start the whole process again. I am not in the room when he's fussing, otherwise he'd just stare at me and never sleep!

Sometimes, Preston can really be tough to put down for a nap, but I keep trying. We are really trying to avoid the bouncer these days.

Why you ask? Why bother doing this sleep training if he likes the bouncer so much?

Preston is very good at arching his back and sliding out of the bouncer. He's getting so big, that it's easier and easier for him to get out and accidentally fall on the ground. Thus the reason we completely got rid of the swing and the bouncer.

So, maybe this will work for you, but I know having a solid routine for Preston has worked and made for a happy baby. Sleep training is hard, but I know it will be worth it in the long run.

We are also so lucky to have found such a wonderful sitter who gives us every detail of Preston's day, and is working hard to team up with us on the sleep training efforts.

Our four month appointment is next week, so hopefully we will be starting solids. So excited!

Master Bed Makeover

During much of my maternity leave, I was doing my best to try and find a new comforter set that would downgrade the loudness of our master bedroom. As you can see, it was LOUD. Way too much goin' on...what was I thinking!?

The hubby likes thin blankets, nothing too thick and bulky - so I went with the quilt. Now don't get me wrong, I love old-timey quilts, but I didn't want that for our master bedroom. We needed something that would work for a young couple.

So, I finally found a set that I mix and matched to make it our own at West Elm online. They have great home products that are right up our alley. Yes, we put some money down on these items, but it was totally worth it.

Here is the quilt set that we bought.

I'm thinking we are a bit softer now :)

The Quilt, Standard Shams, and Euro Shams are from West Elm.

The bed skirt and sheets are from Target.

While the curtains are from Ikea - gotta have my black-out curtains since the sun rises on that side of the house.

Voice Progression

Preston's voice has changed in so many ways, and not so much in the timbre, but in what he's saying.

He's just so adorable - this is from the beginning of January.

Now, last week was Preston's first week at the babysitter's since I went back to work. He hangs out with another baby, and I do believe he is mimicking some things that she says.

Self-Soother!

Preston has never been a baby that enjoy pacifiers. Even when he was first born and we were still in the hospital, he would swirl them around in his mouth wondering what the heck it was. Sometimes he'd suck on it, but he'd eventually spit it out.

He's been that way ever since.

At three months old, though, he's dying to have something in his mouth - and what does he like? Cloth. He loves to chew on our burp cloths, and other towel like material. So a close friend had actually given us a hand puppet that looks like a monster.

Guess who fell in love with it!?

He chews on that thing like it's going out of style.

For a while now, I've been rocking Preston to sleep. But now, I simply lay him down in his bouncer or swing, he'll cry a little bit because he's tired, I give him his monster - he chews...and he calms down and goes to sleep!

I am currently singing the Hallelujah Chorus!

Preston also enjoys sitting with either of us at the piano, watching the music, hitting the keys, and staring at our picture on the wall.

Absolutely precious!

We are just so glad we bought the Bun to One package from our photographer. Every three months within the first year we are able to capture wonderful moments in Preston's life. Priceless.

Three more days, folks. Three more days until I'm back to work and I have to leave my son's care in someone else's hands during the day. I feel guilty, I feel sad beyond words, I feel excited for this new beginning.

I'm a melting pot of emotions right now, and I know this next week is going to be tough. Will I really be able to do this?

As all of you Mom's out there know - when you have kids, it's all about the PHOTOS! And we are so excited to start putting real family photos in our home to truly make it a special space.

Decorating is a lot of fun, but it's the photos and the people in your life that really make it a home. So, Pat and I have started our first photo wall, capturing those precious moments in our lives that we love to look at every day.

Pat and I do have wedding canvases throughout the house, but now there are pictures of someone more important. And Preston is such a cutie!

My next post will include Preston's 3 month photo session - but here are a few to hold you over. He simply makes our heart melt!

There are only six days left until I go back to work, so I am trying to clean this house top to bottom, get Preston's daycare items organized and ready, and spend some qt with Preston, Patrick, and Grammy!

*You are grabbing anything you can, bringing it to your mouth, and chewing
*You are still close to a laugh, but not quite there yet

*You can still roll to your side, but you have no desire to roll all the way over yet

*You've started jumping in your bouncy chair and you L.O.V.E. it!

I have to give you to daycare in a week and a half and I'm not looking forward to it. At all. But I'm trying to stay positive and know that it will just be new and we can get through it. It will just make it that much greater to see you after work, I will be so excited to see you!

Is That Curly Hair Natural!?

Whenever I go into a hair salon, the lovely older ladies always talk about my hair and the obvious question is: "Oh honey, is that natural!?" My answer is always: "Yes Ma'am, it is!". Curly hair has just always been a part of my life, so I've never thought it was so amazing as others did.

But, now I know that curly hair has a purpose! Preston LOVES it...it makes him so giddy :)

These days Preston's morning schedule is as follows:

*Wake up at 4am having been sleeping since 9pm.

*Gulp 5 ounces down, sleep a bit in my lap while I shut my eyes some too.

*Then we go back to sleep at 6am and wake up again around 8:45am

Ever since we traveled so much for Christmas, his sleeping through the night hasn't come back, but this is to be expected.

Preston has his three month professional photos this Sunday and I can not wait! This little guy sure is growing up fast, but I'm loving every minute.

I go back to work on January 30th, so it's really only 2 1/2 weeks away. I'm soaking up all of the mommy/son time I have left on maternity leave.

Happy Tummy Time

My little man, Preston, will be three months old in one week, I can't believe it! And although people have always said he had such strong neck muscles for being so young, he certainly has gotten better at tummy time.

Now he really enjoys it because he can look around and focus on other things.

My heart melts - such a pure smile!

And I'm thinking about writing a tutorial post on how I turned this picture...

...into this. It's actually very easy in Photoshop Elements 7.

Creating a New Life in the New Year

I have a feeling that 2012 is going to be a VERY interesting year for me. I am also taking my New Year's resolutions very seriously this year because I have a new role in life - I'm a Mom!

A lot of people despise the idea of creating New Year's resolutions because they know they are just going to break them and become even more discouraged than before.

But, I am completely FOR resolutions at the beginning of every year. No one is perfect and everyone has room to grow, whether it's with your weight, your body image, the way you dress, how much time you spend with your family, at work, at the gym, etc...it's always nice to strive to be something better. As a Mom and a teacher, I have to be a role model and show that working hard to be your better self is important for self-growth. Why be complacent? We're here on this Earth for a purpose, why not enjoy life while you're trying to figure that out?!

As I will be turning 29 one month from today - I am realizing that I'm in my last year of my twenties...I'm having quite a deja vu moment. In college, I reached my senior year and realized that I had worked so hard for three years and lost that true college experience because all I did was school. I hit my last year and did not want to look back and regret all of the lost time...so I lived it up and truly enjoyed life. As I hit my 29th year of life, I want to do the same. I don't want to look back on my twenties and see that I was always so self-conscious, never really felt good about myself, was always worried about what others thought of me, and allowed the past to create my future. Well...no more!

So, here goes my list of resolutions for 2012. I foresee MANY HUGE changes in my life and I'm more than ready for these changes.

Resolutions (in no particular order):

*Lose the rest of my baby weight and then some. I want to finally be at a weight where I am proud of the way I look. (I want to feel like a Hot Mom) ;)
*Once my body is back, I want a wardrobe makeover. Clothes, both professional and personal, that make me walk tall and smoothly transition into my 30's.
*Be a hands-on Mom. I know that I'm a working Mom, and I am proud of that. I think it will only show my son that I am passionate about what I do and I have a strong work-ethic. But, I'm not going to come home and complain that I am tired. I will spend time with my son as he grows so much in this precious first year of life. I vow to always make time for you, Preston!
*Be a better wife.
*Learn to cook...usually I only eat in the kitchen ;)
*Pick up Photography as hobby.
*And finally, not to let the little things get to me. Relax more, life always works out in the end.

Happy New Year! Too bad I'm still sharing Christmas photos! Oops :)

I thought I'd share with you some of my favorite gifts for Preston and some of the favorites that I received.

If you've never seen this Gund bear - please try and get it. My Mom (Grammy) bought this for Preston, and we can't get enough of it! It's just too cute.

The other favorite gift that Preston received was actually from us. We had our first Build-A-Bear experience and made this little puppy, Shaggy, for Preston. He has a birth certificate and a heart inside him that holds a wish for Preston.

I really thought the whole build-a-bear process was adorable.

Patrick bought me some great gifts that I thought I'd share with you. I desperately needed a new watch, and love what he found!

But the most special gift was this beautiful necklace. A heart with Amethyst and Opal birthstones inside. Patrick and I are both February (amethyst) babies, and Preston was born in October (opal). It's beautiful and will always remind me of our wonderful family that we have created.

Christmas 2011 - Family of Four!

Magical - that's all I can say about Christmas day 2011. Preston was certainly the main attraction :)

Preston napped during the opening of presents and dinner. So, he missed the biggest moments of the day, but it definitely gave us adults some time to chit-chat.

Santa brought him this Pooh Bear "My First Christmas" doll. And Pooh-Bear is sitting on a stool for Preston later in life. It has an adorable giraffe on it, and I can just picture little Preston standing on the stool to brush his little teeth...so cute!

This Christmas ornament sums it up.

Brody got quite a good amount of gifts too - and he loves his Uncle Cliff.

Patrick and I bought Preston Jingle the Dog from Hallmark. Please get these for your children, the characters are great, and reading to your children is SO SO important! Preston will have all of these characters eventually :)

But, I read the book aloud...Preston was sleeping - but Brody was certainly listening intently!

Not only does Brody love Uncle Cliff - but Preston does too. These next two pictures are such special moments.

And our infamous family picture in front of the tree - it was the end of the day, though - and Preston wasn't having it!

The next day, we all ventured out to Tyson's Mall - and it was c.r.o.w.d.e.d. But, we got so many compliments on this little guy :)

Preston Warren - Two Months!

Two months ago today, I gave birth to this beautiful baby boy! It's been an amazing two months at home watching Preston grow up - I don't want to miss a thing.

Neither does Brody, as you can see ;)

Aren't they just darling!?

Two month info:

*You smile a lot more.

*You also wiggle like crazy - you always have to be moving.

*Your two month appointment is on the 21st and I think you are 11 pounds or more. You're heavy, dude!
*You've definitely gotten a lot longer as well.
*You fit into 0-3 month clothes and some 3 month outfits.

*You cry when you are hungry, need a diaper change, or are severely tired and just refuse to sleep. You also get grumpy if we are holding you and not moving - you want to walk everywhere.

*Tummy time has gotten a lot more fun because you can really hold your head up! It's pretty cool to see the progress you've made, and many people say you are really strong for your age.

*You grasp really well. We practice this throughout the day and you love holding our fingers :)
I'm not sure who loves it more, though, you or your parents!

*You are starting to make small noises when you smile - we can't wait until that becomes a laugh.
*You are coo'ing like crazy - it's adorable.

And the SUPER BIG news!? You slept through the night for the first time last night!!!

From 10:00pm until 7:30am. It was AMAZING.

I'm A Big Deal!

It's funny, the pictures of Preston on my computer are all labeled by the date...and I think there's seriously a folder for practically every day!

So, consider these from the first of December ;)

I'd also like to state that I am addicted...

...to buying baby clothes.

He has quite the closet full of clothes, and now that he is inbetween sizes (0-3 and 3 months), I'm just buying like crazy. As I did his laundry tonight, though - I think I'm going to stop for a while. HA!

I am happy to say that Preston is now sleeping in his crib at night instead of the bassinet by our bed. He's only getting up once in the middle of the night which is a lovely change too.

The next hurdle is to start getting him to nap atleast once in his crib during the day, right now he naps in his swing or bouncer seat (it seems to help some of his congestion, and he loves the movement/vibration). I don't want him to get too used to that, but at the same time, I want to use the items we have! He's a newborn, why not let him enjoy them while he can, right!?

We are surely in the Christmas spirit around here, I can't wait for my husband to be on break from work - it'll be nice to have all of us in the house at one time again.

We're All Smiles

My "Little Stomper" is always so smiley, especially in the mornings. But, he really loves his big brother, Brody.

Brody always wants to cuddle.

When I do get smiles, I'm trying to make him smile constantly, no matter how goofy I look.

And this is just perfect for the holiday season. Preston sure is excited!!

Thanksgiving Memories

Kina Grannis

You all know how much I love music - I mean, c'mon - I teach it for a living!

But, I am super stoked to introduce you all to this particular performer, Kina Grannis. She is a wonderful blend of Mandy Moore and Colbie Caillat...both of whom I adore!

Check out the In Your Arms video below - it took two years to create, and everything is made out of jelly beans...almost 300,000 jelly beans to be exact. It's pretty darn cool!

But, besides the videos being creative, the music certainly stands alone.

Happy Baby Workout

Good morning! My little baby boy is napping well in his swing right now, which gave me some time to do some research online. As it is almost 5 weeks after giving birth, all I find myself thinking about is getting rid of the rest of this baby weight.

I gained a total of 40 pounds carrying Preston and have since lost 30 pounds of just water weight. Which, leaves me with 10 pounds to get me back to my pre-baby weight...but I still want to lose more past that.

So what did I find? The Happy Baby Workout!

Pat and I had talked about and budgeted for a few meetings with a personal trainer post baby for myself, but now that Preston is here, I'm having a hard time seeing myself just heading to the gym while I have this time at home, just him and I. I felt a little selfish.

So, I found this dvd that will keep me at home and also enjoy some more one on one time with my baby while getting myself in shape and really working with Preston's developmental progress as well!

Preston Warren - One Month!

I can NOT believe that my little baby is already one month old! Time is moving so fast and he's growing, growing, growing. I'm excited to see who Preston becomes as a person as he gets older, but I know I'll miss these newborn days when they are gone.

Needless to say, I take a lot of pictures ;) Here he is right before our neighborhood walk yesterday.

And now on to the one month pictures! I got some really cute ones as he had just finished eating and was completely satisfied...as well as tired ;) Babies are definitely easier to maneuver when they are slightly tired.

Preston is still sleeping near us in his bassinet, but we foresee crib sleeping soon...let's hope.

He goes for his one month check-up this Thursday, and I'm curious to see how much weight he has gained, he sure feels heavy! I'm guessing close to nine pounds.

He is currently eating three and a half ounces every three hours and sticks to that schedule for the most part. He's a very good eater!

He's not really a fussy baby, he's just very vocal when he knows what he wants. Food, sleep, a diaper change...he'll let us know if we need to make a move.

He is burping much better after each meal, but still gets the baby hiccups atleast once or twice a day.

I LOVE watching him sleep ;)

At night, he usually goes down around 9pm, sleeps for close to four hours straght, eats, and then sleeps again in two to three hour intervals before Pat gets up for work at 5:45am.

He adores his swing...and we do too.

We are so in love with Preston Warren, and again...we can't believe how fast time is going by. But this is one of the best times of our lives!

Happy Sunday, ya'll! It's nice to finally have the hubby home all day since he went back to work. After finishing my first week on my own, I am tired, yes...but so grateful for this time with my little man :)

Since then we've been out a lot and I'm getting much more comfortable taking him places on my own.

After bath time - it's definitely fun to make a mohawk on our guy :)

I feel like I have to take so many pictures. Not only because he's just too cute, but he's already starting to grow out of some clothes, and I need to take a picture of him in them!

And on football Sunday, Preston is rocking his outfit and ready for the celebrations :)

Parenthood

Now that I am on maternity leave, I'm thoroughly enjoying my time at home with my beautiful baby boy, Preston. When he's awake we're playing, doing some tummy time, feeding, changing diapers, or burping. But when he's asleep is when I can either clean the house, get some laundry done, or get in a quick nap.

But, I'm also getting in some tv time, and I thought I'd share with you a movie and a tv show that I'm loving right now.

Parenthood - the movie.
Made in the late 80's/early 90's, this movie is hysterical. If you are a parent, you can relate to almost anything and you will be in stitches from laughing so hard! I HIGHLY recommend it :)

I am beyond obsessed with this show. I just got caught up with all of the seasons and am completely hooked. So many great families to follow, so many great stories, and it's a mix of good drama and comedy.

Definitely a top 5 show for me! Check out some funny moments from Season 2 below.

Picky Sticky Music

Now that Preston is only one week away from being one month old (I know, can you believe it!?) I wanted to buy something to help commemorate each month of his first year for pictures' sake. I found the perfect items to help me do that.

The onesie stickers are from this company: Picky Sticky

We bought the Urban Wonder sticker set...so each month that passes by (way too quickly), we can put one of the stickers on Preston's onesie and capture that special moment in time.

I just think they are absolutely darling! Anybody else used this company?

Bath Time & Brothers

Now that Preston is allowed to be submerged in the water, he's LOVING bath time! And so are we :)

The Bath Luve is a lifesaver - it keeps our little guy nice and warm and calm.

And they make for a really cute photo!

Preston's big brother, Brody, has definitely taken on that role. When he cries, Brody is worried and makes sure that we tend to him right away. He stays up as long as we do at night, wants to kiss him constantly, and especially loves to sleep right beside him when he can.

Can this be any cuter?!

Two Week Update!

Preston is 2 weeks old today! I still can't believe it, time is definitely moving quickly. And he's changing so much as well!

We are trying to get in as many pictures as possible, especially in his unbelievably cute newborn clothes. Soon, he'll grow out of these!

He loves to spend time with Mom & Dad.

And he sleeps a TON!

He usually sleeps for two to three hours, which then follows a quick diaper change and food. We're starting to instill a bedtime routine so he gets used to the difference between day and night...we know this will take a while.

He's also eating two full ounces at each feeding.

Did any of you use music to stimulate your baby while inside the womb? How many of you use all of those lullaby cd's to help your newborn calm down and fall asleep?

Since both of us are music teachers, it seems only fitting to really use music as a tool to soothe our little Preston into a sweet, sweet sleep. So, I thought I'd share with you a series of cd's that are little outside of the box.

Don't you get tired of hearing the same old lullabies after a while? Preston's Birth Story

And what an amazing story it is!

Let me first start by saying that the whole labor/delivery experience was challenging, emotional, phenomenal, and ultimately, the best experience yet. I can't say enough good things about our experience, I can't get it out of my head!

It all started last Thursday, October 13th. God was helping me on that day in the fact that I went through the school day, was able to come home early, drive the 40 minute drive with no problems. I got home and went through my usual routine.

I took the dog out in the backyard to get him some fresh air and let him go to the bathroom. I did walk up and down the long flight of stairs from our deck, but went gingerly and slowly. I then took the dog on a small walk in front of my house to get him some more exercise. About 10 minutes into the walk my water broke! Atleast, I thought that's what it was. I had just been to the bathroom, and knew it wasn't me, but of course I was second-guessing myself.

I immediately called Patrick and let him know what was going on. He had to stay a little late at work that day. I called two or three times and couldn't get a hold of him...I just thought he was in a meeting and couldn't pick up. I finally got a hold of him and said: "Uhhh...I'm leaking fluid!" Who says that!? So you know how he responded? "The car is leaking fluid!?" No, me dude! HA!

So he gets home, and what am I doing? Making the bed, cleaning the house, and getting the rest of the items in my hospital bag. Cool, calm, and collected, that was my plan - no chaotic freak out moments for me. I didn't have any pain what-so-ever, just a lot of fluid. Pat said it was rather anti-climactic ;)

So, I call the dr. and she said to go ahead and come into the hospital, we packed the car and headed on out. We had planned a specific driving route to get to the hospital...did we take it? No! Haha, we were just so excited and in the moment that we were not thinking straight. Luckily I was in no pain, so it really didn't matter.

We arrive at the hospital and they immediately get us a room - they tested the fluid and sure enough, my water had broken and I was ready to roll! I was already at 2 centimeters, I met my nurses and they were wonderful. The dr. came in and I had asked her what was on the schedule and what to expect. They already knew that I wanted an epidural, so I just wasn't sure when they would actually administer it. Basically the answer was...whenever you need it.

But the dr. actually gave me some great advice that I'll never forget. She stated that she believes all women should go through some labor and some pain. The reason is because when you do have an epidural, you need to be able to recognize the pressure so you know when to push. I thought that made total sense!

So, I was determined to kick labor in the face!

They started me on Pitocin. Only one drop per hour and that really got me going. I was feeling contractions, and folks - they weren't fun. But, I was having a break inbetween so I could relax and get ready for the next.

They then upped my Pitocin to 3 drops per hour and my contractions became non-stop. I had no break inbetween and they were excruciating. Pat was rubbing my back, reminding me to breathe, and I was definitely gripping the side of the bed trying to make it through.

They gave me the narcotic Fetinol through my IV to take the edge off - but that didn't work at all! So, I kept laboring through as much as I could until I was 5 centimeters dilated. I felt like such a champ! But, we then called the nurses and said it was time for the epidural. I had endured enough and needed some relief - Pat agreed.

The anesthesiologist came in and did his thing! The epidural was really easy to get through, it wasn't painful at all - the only problem was the fact that I was still contracting through it. So, I had to stay focused and keep breathing, but it was difficult.

Funny story: My gown had started to fall a bit during the epidural procedure and Pat was trying to be such a gentleman and fix it for me while the anesthesiologist was sterilizing my back. Well, the gown hit my back and apparently he gave Pat quite the dirty look. "I have to sterilize again now!", he said...haha! Poor Pat, he just moved back and felt horrible.

Wow - epidurals are AMAZING! I started to feel the relief within 10-20 minutes and was in heaven. I was worried, though, that now my labor would slow down because I remember reading about that. My epidural did quite the opposite. Within just about an hour or so - I was already at 9 centimeters and getting close to pushing.

Pat was constantly on the phone, and we were keeping my mom up to date so she could just come in at the last minute for the birth. She was shocked as to how fast I was progressing. We were too, but the excitement was building! We were going to meet our little man soon!

I made it to 10 centimeters and was feeling good. I was ready to push and make this thing happen. I began pushing and could feel the pressure of the contractions and knew exactly when to push. The nurses and my husband were wonderful coaches, and created a non-chaotic, non-cheerleader like atmosphere. I didn't want anyone to be loud or constantly cheering me on - I needed a quiet, focused, and calming routine.

That's exactly what I got :)

I was not paying attention to the clock, but it was somewhere around 2:30, 3:00 in the morning, and I pushed for about an hour. Nothing. was. happening. They could see his full head of hair, but he never progressed more than that. So, my wonderful nurses gave myself and my husband about 30 minutes to rest and relax after all of that work. It was a good thing, because we both had been up since 5:00am on Thursday!

I started pushing again.

The problem, though, was the fact that Preston's heart rate would drop to about 80 every time I had a contraction - so of course that worried all of us. They then put me on oxygen to give him and myself an extra boost. At this point, my mom arrived and we were able to visit for a bit. It was really comforting to know that she was in the hospital - but it remained only Patrick and I in the room throughout the rest of labor. I wouldn't have had it any other way.

What a special bond we have now!

My dr. then came in and analyzed the situation. She had asked me to push and also saw that the pushing was just not doing a thing.

They broke down the bed, and we were about to get down and dirty and really make this happen. But from this point on, it felt like one thing after another was happening that strayed us further and further away from meeting this guy in a natural way.

The nurses asked if I was ok with an episiotomy and I had done my research beforehand - so my answer was yes. Do whatever you have to do to get my little guy out safely and perform something that I felt was better for me as well.

At this point, the dr. informed Patrick and I that there was maconium in the fluid and that the NICU dr's and nurses would have to be present for the actual birth. I was ok with that. But the room began to get crowded. So, after Preston was born, I knew that they wouldn't immediately put him on my chest, nor would Pat get a chance to cut the cord. When there is that strong of a chance that the baby could inhale maconium, they do not mess around. I had pure professionals around me, it was really amazing to experience.

The dr. also stated that my pushing was not doing as much as they would like, and I had really pushed for almost 2 hours at that point. So, a vacuum was needed to help him make his debut. But, they also said there was a possibility of an emergency c-section if need be. So, I was prepared for anything.

I had gotten sick and was throwing up at this point, I'm assuming from the epidural. At that point, Pat informed me later that that's when the dr. performed the episiotomy, which I didn't feel, and things were really happening.

The first vacuum did not take hold of Preston's head. So, they needed a larger suction. They attached the second vacuum, and his head came out!

Now granted, while they are suctioning him, I am still pushing through my contractions to really make sure he's coming through. So, I was still hard at work and was truly determined. Pat was such a good coach, he saw all of this going down and made it through like a champ. I was so proud of him and also thankful for his undying love and support. What an amazing father and husband :)

The second vacuum had worked, I pushed, and Preston was out! The dr. immediately started sucking out anything that could have been present in his lungs, and Pat and I's immediate emotion was to begin balling our eyes out. After all of that hard work, Preston had arrived and was absolutely beautiful!

The NICU dr's told us that we really didn't need them, which is a good thing, and they headed out. Preston weighed in at 7 lbs. 13 ounces and was 20 inches long. He had quite a conehead because of the vacuums, but that soon went away.

We were delighted to have a happy, healthy baby boy on the 14th of October, 2011 at 5:51am. The proudest day of our lives.

I then knew the reason why my pushing never really worked. Preston had turned at some point and was postherior. He actually came out face up which creates a lot of back labor and makes it MUCH harder to push him out on my own. SHEESH!

For all of those women bloggers out there who I have come to know in the past nine months and are SO close to giving birth - please know that it will be the most wonderful experience of your life. I still can't stop thinking about the whole process.

Surreal, divine, emotional - those words don't even begin to describe the moment. Know that you can do it, modesty truly does go out the window, and simply vow to accept whatever happens. Whether your birth plan gets played out or not, it's all about creating a healthy arrival for your little one.

I hope you've enjoyed our birth story, we had such a powerful experience with amazing dr's and nurses and we couldn't be happier.

Preston Warren made an early arrival on October 14th @ 5:51am, weighing in at 7 lbs. 13 ounces!

Today, I am 38 weeks pregnant. This is my last week at work. Preston is almost here! Nesting. Is. Here. Now. :)

I still can't believe that I only have five more days of work until the end of January. It feels surreal, but it also feels like such a wonderful, new beginning in our lives. Pat gets three weeks off from work and I am so grateful for that time. But just to be able to spend time with my family throughout that time is absolutely priceless, and I plan on using it to the fullest.

Many new beginnings are coming our way, and I can't wait for Preston to experience it with us. We've created a cozy, comfy home for him, now we are so close to creating a wonderful life for him as well!

I will certainly keep you all posted in the next coming days...it's time to meet this little guy! :)

As you know, David Nail is my absolute favorite artist right now. I can't get enough of his voice and style...and look ;) His first album "I'm About to Come Alive" was a huge success for him, which even included a grammy nomination for his song "Turning Home".

Natural Childbirth

Now, you all know that an epidural is my plan - yes indeedy - and I'm stickin' to it! Here's why I believe in them:

When you go to the dentist to get a cavity filled - do you use novocaine?
Well, when you have to push a baby out - why wouldn't you do the same thing!?
An epidural is my novocaine :)

36 Week Update

Pregnancy Highlights

How far along? 36 Weeks

Size of the baby? The last ultrasound estimated 6.2 pounds already. But the tech also said that that could be off by a pound. So, not quite sure, but should be atleast close to 6 pounds.

Maternity Clothes? I bought a few more items that will cover me through the rest of work as the weather gets a bit colder. Had to buy a bigger size of jeans, got some maternity leggings (amazing), and a new dress.
Gender? We found out he's still a boy! Preston Warren :)

Movement? V.e.r.y. P.a.i.n.f.u.l. He's getting bigger, and now most movements are causing pain. Whether it's him sitting on my bladder, or kicking whatever other organs are around...the pressure is there and it doesn't feel good.

Sleep? I currently have quite a head cold, and am not sleeping as well. Getting up to take some more medicine to clear my head, also to go to the bathroom, and possibly pop some tums to remedy random heartburn.

Cravings? Food. Especially sweets.

Symptoms? Extremely lathargic. But that's from a mix of being 9 months pregnant and still having the same work schedule as if I wasn't. My work schedule is absolutely killing me, and I'm afraid it might kick me into early labor. Long days, the need for constant energy, and a lot of preparation for being out for 12 weeks is really taking a toll on me. All on top of having an annoying cold and coming home to just go to dr.'s appointments, classes, meetings with the pediatrician, rehearsals after school, and now competitions on the weekends. I'm tired, people.

Best Moment of the Week? Being able to spend some time with my Mom. She came down to the house on Thursday, and stayed through the weekend to help clean our home and begin the process of washing baby clothes and other items. She's a godsend, a blessing, and wonder woman. I don't know how we could have done all of that with our work schedule and never being home. We are truly blessed to have her in our lives!

No picture this week, sorry...just no time. I have another busy week ahead, and my next dr.'s appointment is on Friday. I haven't progressed any in the labor process, but I'm hoping that this week's appointment isn't as traumatizingly painful as the last one. Cross your fingers that Preston's dropped a bit.

I think I'm ready for maternity leave.

My First Halloween

I can't tell you how excited Pat is that our little guy, Preston, will be born just before Halloween. His first holiday, besides his birthday, will be Halloween - so we will definitely need a cute costume!

Baby Shower!

This past weekend I had my first amazing baby shower with a group of people that are near and dear to my heart. The shower included friends from work, friends from college, and various friends made along the way. It was such a wonderful time!!

Thank heaven for little boys! Maybe I'll get a flag like this for our front yard ;)

Preston isn't even here yet and he stole the show!

Amazing food!

Really fun games, especially this one. It was a matching game with words that had to do with pregnancy, such as: engorgement (ha!), delivery doctor, epidural, Daddy, etc.

But the truly fun part was seeing the prize for the person who made the match.

Delivery Doctor - the prize was: A Butterfinger candybar
Daddy: - the prize was: A Mr. Hunk candybar
Epidural - the prize was: Lifesavers
Engorgement - the prize was: A Mounds candybar

So fun!

We also had a "Guess the baby picture" game.

The gifts were fantastic! Whether it was handmade blankets, toys, or diapers and wipes...all of them will be used, so I thank you all!!

So, I have my 34 week dr's appointment tomorrow with another ultrasound to see how big Preston is. Pat and I also have our first labor/delivery class together - it should be interesting!!!

34 Weeks & Remembering 9/11

How far along: 34 Weeks

Size of the baby: Getting close to 5 pounds!

Maternity clothes: I'm growing out of the clothes I initially bought. I'm slowly but surely getting some more clothes that are appropriate for work.

Gender: Better still be a boy!! ;)

Movement: I can really tell that Preston is getting bigger. He isn't able to move as freely as he was just a few weeks ago. Also, some of his movements are starting to become a touch uncomfortable.

Sleep: I toss and turn, leg cramps have come back a bit, and I get up two to three times a night. The regular routine has turned into sleeping pretty terribly for a few nights in a row, and then one REALLY heavy night of sleep.

Cravings: Food in general :) This whole pregnancy, I have not had crazy cravings like pickles and ice cream. Sorry, I'm kind of boring!

Symptoms: If I sit or stand for long periods of time, I can feel my feet starting to swell. I'm not a fan of that feeling. Also, I get tired much quicker these days...for example, I just went on a walk with Pat this morning, and it was much shorter than usual.

Best Moment of the Week: My Baby Shower! It was just yesterday and I can't wait to share pictures with you :) Wonderful friends and family joined me for a great afternoon in celebration of Preston's arrival. We are beyond excited, and couldn't feel more blessed. Thank you to everyone who was there!

I hope you've enjoyed more of our maternity pictures. We've really fallen in love with a lot of them, and in this post are some of our favorites.

On a more important note, I am glued to the news today just as I was ten years ago. September 11, 2001 was the beginning of my college career. I was getting ready for an 8am music class watching the tv and immediately calling my family members. I will never forget that day and that part of our history.

Preston will also know what happened on that fateful day - it was an important part of his parents lives.

We will never forget!!

Sneak Peak Maternity Pics!

A few of our maternity pictures have been posted and we are so excited about how they turned out!

This past Saturday we headed out to take our first round of five sessions of pictures with this particular photographer. We headed to a local historical location that had many beautiful landscapes and started the process. Can we say HOT!? It had just finished raining, and it did not make it cooler, it was quite muggy. Pat had to carry a few napkins for me so I could wipe myself down before pictures!

Here Comes the Sun

As I came home tonight from work, I caught this story on the local news. A terrible situation for these animals that ended up having a happy ending - all caught on tape.

These animals were taken from birth to a lab and were given HIV and Hepatitis. Finally freed, watch as they enjoy the sunlight and nature itself for the first time. Read the full article HERE.

Weekend Happenings

Many things are happening this weekend...so that means, so much to blog about soon!

*Today, Pat and I are going to get our maternity pictures done :) We have two seperate outfits each, and we are headed to Chatham Manor to capture this amazing pregnancy. I'm excited to make these memories and hopefully share them with you in the next coming days!

*My Mom, brother and his girlfriend are all headed down to our house tomorrow to celebrate Mom & Cliff's birthdays. So excited to help Pat smoke barbecue, make slaw, hushpuppies, and amazing mac & cheese for the occasion. Cornhole and Ladder Ball will ensue as well :)

*Monday will hopefully be a day of relaxing, because...Tuesday officially starts school. I can't believe it's here already, and it should be interesting. I can't wait until my maternity leave where I can spend quality time with my family and our new addition, Preston.

Well, I'm off to get ready for these maternity picures - I got my hair cut and highlighted and I'm ready to smile a ton! I have a lot to smile about these days :)

A Place for Preston

I really wanted Preston's nursery to feel comfortable, cozy, and when he's a bit older, for him to know that it is his space. Every kid needs their own room to be themselves in. So, Pat and I wanted something that was personal and built by someone's own two hands.

Don't you just love it!? My brother and I both had signs like this growing up and I always really enjoyed them. My room felt like my own space that was just for me.

I've just been so excited to create this post to share with you all! My husband, Mom, and I are so pleased with how this piece turned out that we just can't keep it a secret anymore :)

Remember this piece? It was a Goodwill dresser that was only priced at $20.00 (and I had a 20% discount for donating the week before). It took some persuading for my husband to buy into the idea, but he finally did. It was in great shape, all real wood...just needed some true DIY TLC.

At another Goodwill across town, I found a mirror that would go perfectly with the dresser. It was a great size, and only $8.00! SOLD!

Well friends, we truly have gone Geek to Chic. A social disaster to the most popular kid in school!

Just look at it...LOOK AT IT :) I know I can't stop staring!!

We used the same white paint from doing the beadboard wallpaper a few weeks ago on the entire body of the dresser, and then used a small sample of simple wood stain to give it more of a boyish look. I also changed out the handles to bring it back to this decade :) Stain and handles all from Lowes.

Ahhhh. It's light, it's airy, beachy...it feels like a little boys room.

We just have a few more things to accomplish in the room before I give a full tour, but it's just down the road. Can't wait! A BIG thank you goes to my Mom and Patrick for doing 95% of the work on this dresser. Pregnancy can really slow you down and make it tough to participate in big DIY projects like this one.

Well, after surviving the East Coast Quake at work, making it through a few after-shocks, and now preparing for Hurricane Irene, I'd say it's time to go. Have a great weekend, everyone!

31 Weeks

Me back at 20 weeks...seems like so long ago!

How Far Along: 31 Weeks.

Size of the Baby: A little over 3 pounds.

Maternity Clothes: I know I'm going to have to buy a few more items, not just because I'm still growing, but because the seasons are changing and work is starting back up.

Gender: It's a boy! Although, I have nightmares that the ultrasound tech got it wrong, and I'm going to have a girl. Oh the horror!

Movement: Lord have mercy - a ton! He squirms, he reacts when I poke at my stomach, I watch my stomach move around constantly. It really is the highlight of our evenings - just to stare at my stomach. HAHA!

Sleep: I toss and I turn. From one side to the next. Lately, I mostly sleep on my right side, because if I sleep on my left, MAJOR leg cramp. Last night was the first night in a while that I didn't get any leg cramps. I really slept well. I doubt that will happen again.

Cravings: I have a sweet tooth.

Symptoms: Leg Cramps at night, that's about it. Baby brain overload too - I make stupid mistakes these days, especially at work. But I also sometimes forget that I'm pregnant until I feel the baby moving, I get up too quickly, or I stand for too long while teaching. I really have to make sure I sit every now and again, or else I'm exhausted and sore.

Best Moment of the Week: Finally finishing the furniture transformations in Preston's Nursery. I can't wait to share with you in the next few days what we've done. We are just so proud of it and I'm kind of jealous of his crazy, awesome room! I am also having a Nursery Door Plaque made for Preston by Susie Harris - go check out her work, it's amazing. It's so my style, and I can not WAIT to show you all the final product!

And here's a few pictures for this 31 week update. No swelling at all, the doctor says that my weight gain is good, blood pressure is normal, and everything looks perfect. Hopefully he continues to say those kind words until Preston makes his appearance!

Big difference from 20 weeks, eh?

Hopes for Preston

Dear Preston,

As I am entering into my 31st week of pregnancy, you are kicking my like crazy, making my belly shift in all kinds of crazy positions, and I am more than excited to finally meet you! I am mostly excited, though, about how we plan to raise you, what kind of life we hope you have, and getting to know the amazing people that are in your family. You've got some amazing people already surrounding you :)

A list of my hopes for you:

*You grow up to be a chivalrous, kind, loving, giving, hard working man. Someone who works hard for success in their life, but knows what's most important - family. It's not about what you do, it's about who you are and how you love.

*You understand the importance of family. At any moment you could lose someone extremely important to you, cherish the time you have with them and tell them you love them every day.

*You have FUN as a kid. Be a kid. You don't need to be an adult so soon, enjoy adolescence while it's there, don't rush life.

*Strive to be the best you can be. If you don't understand something, learn. Realize that we aren't perfect, and that everyone can be better in some way, including yourself.

*An education is important. Your parents aren't teachers for nothing. We believe that an educated citizen is a productive citizen. School will be your job during the school year - study, get good grades, and feel good about yourself as a student of life.

*You will know who your grandfather was. My Dad was a wonderful man who was hard working, kind, had the best laugh in the world, and was so approachable. He could really tell a story too! Don't worry, I'll fill you in :)

*A sense of humor is important. Know your Uncle Cliff, he is HILARIOUS...but one of those guys that is extremely kind and giving. He also has the common sense to make it through this crazy world. Being book smart is great - but having common sense is key to making good life decisions. Be careful on those four-wheelers with him later in life, though! ;)

*Have a love for music. Any kind of music. Trust me, you'll hear plenty of it...in fact, you already have! Have an appreciation for the importance of music and soak yourself in it, every genre. You don't have to play in band. Be you. But, know that music really is the universal language.

*Understand that life isn't always going to be rosy. It can certainly throw curveballs that you have to get through. But, that's life. We survive and keep living. Your Grandmother always told me: "No matter how bad you think you have it, somebody's got it worse." So when I do something you may not like, know that it's not the end of the world, and you've got it pretty good ;)

*Be a gentleman, someone who opens doors for others, who helps others out when they need a lending hand, who goes above and beyond to be kind. That graciousness will come back to you, I promise.

*Know to stand up for yourself. Be confident in what you can do. If you don't love yourself, how can you love anyone else? You are perfect just the way you are!!!

And finally, look up to your Dad. What a good man. Know that he loves your Mom unconditionally. He treats everyone with respect and really knows how to have FUN in life. He never takes anything for granted, is extremely loyal, and will ALWAYS be there for you. The first time your grandfather met him, he said: "Boy, he's sure got personality!". And he does, he's one of a kind!

*There are so many other family members I haven't even touched on yet, so get ready for more!

We love you, Preston. Wherever life takes you, know that we love you and will always be there for you. Family comes first, and I can't wait for two to soon become three!!

The Things People Say...

I'm in a mood. And I don't think it has anything to do with my hormones. It has everything to do with people. And their lack of couth. The things people say just boggles my mind and will forever shock me. The one aspect of pregnancy that I absolutely can't stand is the reaction from negative people.

Didn't your mother ever teach you "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"?

So, I wanted to share with you a few things that people have so forwardly said. But in between those negative nancy quotes, have a good laugh from reading the maternity t-shirts I found from Customized Girl :)

"Well, you didn't get FAT anywhere else but your stomach."

"Is that baby, or just fat?"

In a bitter tone: "Get ready for your life to change..."

DUH! But, I think my life will change for the better! Why does a baby have to make my life worse? Don't people have fun anymore?

"Geez, there must be something in the water!"

People just irritate me sometimes. To all of you pregnant women out there, have you had any negative nancy's voice something to you as you grow? I'd love to hear!

I just have to laugh at people, they will forever be shockingly funny.

Wedding vs. Baby Registries

Two main events in your life allow you to register online so your friends and family have a better idea of exactly what you need, weddings and babies. Did we survive without registries years ago? Yes. Do registries sometimes feel rude and pompous? I think so. But most people register for as much as they can and then make up the rest on their own, right?

Well, I gotta tell ya folks, this baby registry was really one of the toughest lists I've had to create. I had to do my research and check out other couples registries. Whew! So, to help some of you out, I thought I'd share with you a few of my favorite items from my baby registry.

Onesies. A lot of onesies. In variating sizes. A necessity.

I really wanted a shopping cart cover. Eddie Bauer makes very cute covers for boys - and for a wonderful price!

And finally, even though we have bumpers that came with our Pottery Barn crib bedding package, we want to use a breathable bumper for a while.

Nursery Updates & Info

There are finally some new things happening in Preston's Nursery! Our Crib Mattress arrived as well as his Pottery Barn bedding. It's just too darn cute!

First let me talk to you about the mattress we chose. We bought it through Amazon because they have great deals that change almost every day. So, you can always find a price that suits you.

We bought the: Sealy Posturepedic Springfree Soybean & Latex Foam-Core Crib Mattress. What a name, right?

The reviews for this thing are amazing, and like I had said before, if anything was going to be organic for little Preston, it was going to be the bedding and bed itself. We aren't the "greenest" people in the world, but in certain things, organic just makes us feel a bit better. Plus, one side is firmer and made for babies, simply flip it over, and it's a bit softer for the toddlers!

Ah, the dresser and mirror dilemma. What color should we paint them!? Do we stick with white or pick a totally different color? Any suggestions?

The teddy bears inside the crib are from when I grew up.

This is a picture from my nursery and it's perfect. A little boy crawling up the steps with a puppy that looks just like our Brody!

So, we still have things to hang on the wall, furniture to paint, and a rug to purchase. Do you think we should stick with a blue rug, or maybe change it up with green?

How about that dresser/mirror combo - what color!? I just can't decide.

The Great Outdoors

We were having a bird problem. On our deck. They would play, eat, and poop all over our deck furniture. Annoying. So, we finally decided to buy a bird feeder along with a hummingbird feeder to keep these little guys away from our stuff. So far...it's working!

They are so much cuter when they are not on our deck, it's amazing! Here is a beautiful Woodpecker. Notice how he won't let that other little Finch on the post eat, he's such a bully!

I also needed some more color in the back yard - so of course I chose my ECU colors, purple & gold! Gotta love some $2.80 mums.

Catching a picture of a Hummingbird feeding is like trying to find a needle in a haystack - but, here's the feeder atleast. We have had quite a few come and visit us.

So our wild and crazy days this summer have turned into watching tv or movies, staring at my belly as Preston kicks it repeatedly, and now...bird watching.

New Music & The Bachelorette

And we're back! What a whirlwind week it was taking the guitar graduate class and then heading to the in-laws for a few days. Yesterday was quite the lazy day for me, I was exhausted! So, I thought I'd stay a little layed back today and show you some great music that's come out as well as talk about the infamous Bachelorette, Ashley.

First, Josh Kelley came out with his new video for "Gone Like That". Love the song, not too impressed by the video...seems way too cheesy.

Miranda Lambert has her new single out: "Baggage Claim" - lots of inuendos in here, she's not talking about a real baggage claim here, people. It's definitely different than music from her "Revolution" cd, but I like the direction she's going in. This chick can do no wrong in my eyes.

And lastly, I know many of you watched The Bachelorette last night. I can't help myself, I love this show! Although, she didn't pick "my" guy last night - I really wanted Ben to win, and frankly, I appreciated his honestly when she LET HIM GET DOWN ON ONE KNEE to propose, and then basically said no.

What are your thoughts on The Bachelorette - did you want Ben or JP to win? Did you like the proposals?

Well, we're having a barbecue at our house tomorrow, so today is filled with cleaning and shopping! You know I have to have this house ready for company :) Please no rain!!

I have a little problem with this. Here's how my nightly routine goes: I wash my face, brush my teeth, and take my vitamin. I head to the bed, turn the fan on high because I'm a constant OVEN right now, and I then lay down and get myself comfortable. I've trained myself to lay on the left side first. Well...Preston does NOT like this.

Not only does he hate it, but he proceeds to punch me until I switch sides and stop laying on his head. HARD punches. Lord have mercy, I think I've got a wild one on my hands! I actually lay there and say: "Ok, Ok...I'm moving, dude, calm down".

He's already like his Mom...he'll let you know how he feels! :) My kinda kid!!

Strummin' My Gi-tar

That's right, ya'll! All this week I will be learning how to properly play the gi-tar!

It really is an amazing opportunity to earn 3-credits toward my teaching licensure, for little to no money at all, PLUS, I get a free guitar and case, and an entire STACK of methods books, lesson plans, etc...all in only 4 1/2 days! You all know that college courses don't come cheap, so I really am blessed to have found this class. The hubby and I are taking it together, quite a hoot!

But, I have to tell ya, my fingers hurt, my booty hurts from sitting in a chair all day, and I'm just plain tired! I make sure to get up a lot to stretch, I'm eating healthy snacks during the day to keep me goin'...and it's pretty funny to see this 6 month pregnant lady holding a guitar against her belly. Preston sure did move a lot today, he even kicked the guitar a time or two. I guess he knows I still suck ;)

I hope you all are doing well! I'm thankful for the rain storm today too, it lowered some of our crazy heat index numbers!

Accessorize While Pregnant!

Despite my last post and my LONG dislike list - please don't confuse that for ungratefulness. I feel extremely blessed to be pregnant and have this chance to grow my family with my husband!

Now, lately all I'm able to shop for are maternity clothes - and yes, I've upped my sizes from medium to large now - joy. But to make myself feel normal, I'm still accessorizing like crazy! So, I thought I'd share with you what I've bought this summer - now mind you, they were all under $5.00!

I'm Just Being Honest...

Alright ladies, it's time to be truly honest. I'm not quite sure why people say they absolutely LOVE pregnancy and then miss it later. Maybe I will get to that point once Preston decides to arrive, but mentally, I am not there yet. So, I thought I'd share with you what I like about pregnancy, and what I don't like...don't be sad if the dislike list is longer than the other. It's just the truth.

LIKE:
*I feel about as feminine as I can get. It's pretty cool to actually do something that only women are able to do. I feel powerful.
*It's cool to feel little Preston move, but I have to admit, sometimes it's just plain weird.
*Maternity Clothes - dude, they should make skinny jeans exactly like maternity jeans, they are AMAZING!

*Realizing that yes, my body is changing, but it's ok, because I'm pregnant. Of course I exercise and try to eat fairly well so I stay healthy and am not GIGANTIC after I give birth - I don't want my recovery phase of getting back to a skinnier version of me to be that difficult. (PS - we budgeted in a personal trainer for me after I have the baby - I'm so excited!)
*Being able to connect with other women who are going through the same thing that I am, it's a blessing and it's so nice to connect with other girls around my age, especially at work! When you get older, your friend base changes and almost gets a bit smaller, so it's nice to add more incredible folks to my inner circle of people!
*Getting the nursery ready - what a fun task!
*Knowing that the end result is going to be a beautiful and fun human being who is really going to change our lives for the better!

DISLIKE:
*I hate not being able to sleep on my back. It's just so uncomfortable.

*People wanting to do everything for me. It's really sweet, but some people just act as though I'm an invalid because I'm pregnant. I can still do things, people!
*I run out of breath going up a flight of stairs - embarassing!

*I miss my WINE!

*Certain parts of your body gain a little weight here and there, so far I've mostly just been showing in my belly (thank the lord!), but I hear that the third trimester will really do a number on me! I'm crossing my fingers that it's not that bad.

*The crying. I'm usually not that much of a cryer (unless I'm watching a sad movie). But dang, I can cry at the drop of a hat lately...it makes me feel weak sometimes.

*I have had a pregnant, hormonal moment where I had a terrible day at work, came home and things were crappy there too, so I went through a fit of rage throwing things, and made a hole in my master bedroom door. Oops! ;) I think Pat was a little scared!
*Stressing about labor & delivery...lord have mercy, I've watched more baby story shows on TLC than EVER BEFORE! Some days I feel as though I can kick labor/delivery's ass, and others I'm scared sh--less!

*Preston is sitting very low in my stomach (which I hope helps me later down the road - it's like he's knocking on the door to the world, haha!) and so he's sitting on some nerves in my rump, causing shooting pains to go down my leg that end behind my knee. Those suck.
*The dumb comments people make: "Are you having twins, you're HUGE!", "When are you having another kid?" (dude, I haven't even had this one yet!), "There must be something in the water because everyone is pregnant". People are annoying.

*Gaining weight, I hate seeing these numbers on the scale.

WHEW! Did I scare you enough? Are you having some of these same feelings? Talk to me, ladies - even the husbands! Are your wives going through the same things? Let's let it all hang out!

The Preston Story

Show Us Your Life: How did you share you were pregnant with your husband/family?
Today I'm linking up with Kelly's Korner and letting you in on some fun stories about how we told our parents about little baby Preston. First it was my Mom, and I was only 5 weeks pregnant. Pat and I had not yet given her any framed wedding pictures - I know, I know...it was already two years later. Oops!

But, with two framed wedding pictures, we also gave her an empty frame. She looked at both of us, and said "why are you giving me an empty frame!?" I responded with: "Well, you can fill that one in about nine months!" She said: "GET OUT!" She was super excited! A wonderful moment for all of us :)

Pat's parents were next - we had a packaged gift for them. They proceeded to open it, inside was a grandparents photo album, especially for them. They already have one grandchild, so the suprise wasn't out just yet! Patrick then said: "It's a photo album where you can now organize your photos of little Lilly - AND OUR little one in October!" They were so excited!

We didnt' tell anyone else besides family until I was atleast 12 weeks pregnant - what a tough secret to keep!

The next fun story to tell was the gender of our baby. Telling our parents ALWAYS came first. It was so much fun trying to be creative and inventive!

So, we're in the dr's office, and we had just found out the gender and we were beyond happy. I immediately called my Mom, and all I said was: "Go to the grocery store, head to the bakery, and pick up an order for YOU!" Mom was hesitant at first, but she obliged. Pat and I were now riding home from the dr's office and Mom had just made it home after the whirlwind, unknown trip to the bakery! We then told her to open box #2 - and sure enough, inside was a cupcake with BLUE icing! WOO HOO!

Then, we skyped Pat's parents. If you've never used Skype, it's pretty darn cool - try it out with those long-distance family members. It's a great and cheap way to keep in touch.

We had made these AWESOME t-shirts, just check 'em out :)

I was out of the camera scene and then popped in with my blue t-shirt that said BOY!

So far this pregnancy has been a whirlwind of great memories and we're getting closer and closer to meeting Preston. I can not wait! It's been a fun and creative ride so far!

I absolutely fell in love with this song yesterday...it's powerful and has a lot of meaning behind it.

I really like the simplicity of the music, as well as Demi Lovato's voice and the emotion in it. I've never really listened to her stuff before, but if she continues to sing and write like this, she may sway my decision.

A Babymoon, Babies, and a Nursery Update

It's ok if you didn't know this term before today, I had no clue either until a few weeks ago! A few friends asked us where we would be going on our "babymoon". What the hell is that!? Well, once we found out that it was simply a small getaway, just the two of us (and maybe the pup), we were on it! :)

The first thing that came to my mind was The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. I have wanted to go back there ever since a few of our friends were wed there. It's gorgeous, and would be such a luxurious memory before baby Preston arrives.

Then I looked at places in Virginia, closer to home, and check out this bed & breakfast - The Hummingbird Inn. Look their specific babymoon package...these REALLY DO exist!!

» 2 nights in either the Alleghany or Franklin Room (Jacuzzi bath, a must)

» Roses / Chocolate-covered strawberries / Sparkling cider for Mom and wine for Dad (in your room when you arrive)

» Milk and cookies at bedtime

» Full breakfast each morning

» A couple’s massage (with doctors OK for Mom, please)

» A carriage ride in Historic Lexington

Any suggestions of great places to visit for rest and relaxation before baby comes?

Pat and I recently visited a few of our dear friends, Racheal & Jameson. They have the cutest TWINS - Julianna & Alexander...we love spending time with them!

Aren't they cute in their tiny rocking chairs!?

They loved sitting on our laps :) We can't wait to see them again.

As per request, here are a few pictures of our nursery so far. Again, unfinished - we still have chair rail to put up, some more painting to do, and small decorating details to add. Bare with me!

This is the rocking chair that was used both in my and my brother's nurseries when we were little. I love that! Must. find. cushions.

Preston's closet is already pretty full, and this doesn't even include the entire TUB of clothes that Racheal & Jameson passed down to us, which we'll pass back when they have more kids!

Preston is going to be one good lookin' dude!

25 Week Update

How far along? 25 weeks today!

Size of the baby? Probably over a pound and the size of an average rutabaga.

Maternity Clothes? Heck to the yes! I am even starting to get a little bit big for some of those (can we say depressing!?) I've also started wearing my husbands exercise clothes when I'm lounging around the house on these lazy summer days...they are much bigger and oh so comfy!

Gender? Boy!

Movement? This little sucker moves all the time! He especially moves when I first wake up and when I'm headed to bed. Also, if I'm kickin' my potassium levels into high gear and eating a banana with some peanut butter - he LOVES it!

Sleep? Has gotten a touch better, I just constantly roll from one side to the other. I'd say I sleep for a good 2-3 hours at a time, and then I have to either switch positions or get up to use the restroom.

Cravings? Food in general! Haha! I'm still on a Kiwi-Strawberry Snapple kick, but I'm doing my best to drink a TON of water too.

Symptoms? My lower back is a pure mess this week. It almost feels bruised. Also, from the back pain comes shooting pains down my leg and stopping right behind my knee, like I've pulled a muscle or something. So, again, I'm trying to beef up my potassium levels as well as propping my feet up whenever I sit. Tums are also my best friend - heartburn city!

Best moment of the week? Being able to get out of the car when I had been in it for over 11 hours coming back from vacation :) Also, receiving beautiful gifts from so many friends...THANK YOU ALL!!!!

PS - checking out pictures from our younger days...what do you think Preston will look like!? Can you imagine him yet? :)

Indiana Summer 2011

It's been a while, glad to see your face! We're back and well-rested since our week long trip to Indiana. It was certainly a long drive to and from, but we made it in one piece and created a lot of good memories along the way.

The Things They Don't Tell You...

Calling all Mom's, Calling all Mom's!!

As I've now had a few days off on summer break, I find myself (5 months pregnant) obsessing over labor and delivery. I am looking online, reading books, trying to find any information I can on the things they don't tell you about. But you know, the best resource are those of you Mom's who have been there-done that!

So I'm looking for your advice for questions like:

*What did you pack in your bag to head to the hospital?
*What did you wish you had known before you went into labor?
*What should you do to prepare?
*How much power/say do you have in the labor/delivery room?

I think all of your comments on this post will not only help me, but plenty of other first-time-moms-to-be bloggers out there! Thank you in advance :)

PS - the nursery is coming along - we picked the perfect blue color, now we are just waiting on our beadboard wallpaper to complete the walls. I'll be posting an update soon!

Makin' Out Like a Bandit!

So, our little Preston isn't even born yet, and he's already makin' out like a bandit with gifts! I just can't wait to put these items to use when he finally arrives!

Our amazing friends Amber and Tim bought him his first football! I won't fault them for getting the football in Colts colors because I know that my brother will be sheling out a lot of Redskins stuff too! Yes, we are a house divided ;)

Our good friends Tim and Val gave us the cutest hooded towel - it says: "Mommy's Little Star". How adorable!

The college fund will start here! A cute piggy bank from one of my students.

Diapers and baby tunes...can't go wrong there! Thank you, Laura and Jon!

Also from Laura and Jon is this rocktastic outfit! I absolutely adore the shorts and shoes - Pat and I went to East Carolina - so you can't go wrong with Pirate paraphernalia!

And lastly, Pat's family and I headed down to Va. Beach yesterday to check out the last day of the Arts & Crafts show along the boardwalk. Tons of great art (rather expensive, though) and food - but we couldn't pass up this particular tent. The family makes art from Sea glass. Totally perfect for Preston's nursery!

The Nursery Basics

Patrick and I have already ordered some of the nursery basics for little Preston. I am very excited to get this room started :)

Both of the following items are from Pottery Barn Kids, and we adore them. Thanks to my Mom for our wonderful gifted crib!!!

And we bought bedding from there as well, that we felt was really nice for a little boy. Now, I know, everyone hears Pottery Barn and assumes it's super expensive. But, actually, in comparison to many other stores, the prices were the same or better. We were just as surprised as you!

Plus, we really like the fact that this baby bedding is organic. If one thing ended up being organic, I wanted it to be the bedding.

Some other ideas we have for the nursery include chair rail, beadboard wallpaper, and some more navy and green colors throughout the room.

PS - only one more day of work before SUMMER BREAK...thank goodness!

BOY!!!
Preston Warren W. will be entering the world in October and we are absolutely elated! The crib has been bought, bedding has been picked out, and our ideas are endless for decorating the nursery! I'll keep you posted now on how we are preparing for this little guy to arrive :)

PS - Preston got one of his first gifts yesterday - a football!! :)

Pink or Blue?

We've come to the 20 week (actually 21 week) ultrasound appointment! Tomorrow at 3:30pm, Pat and I will know if we are having a boy or girl! Will we be decorating the nursery with girly colors or more boy colors? I absolutely can not wait!

Everybody who's been pregnant knows that everyone else around them has an opinion on whether you are having a girl or a boy. I've had dreams. But again, I will be so happy with a HEALTHY baby!

I love my mom's reaction to my question: "So, what do you think we're having, a boy or girl?!"
Mom's response: "Courtney, I come from the generation of - you take what you get!"

HA! So, That's going to be my mentality tomorrow, I'll take what God has decided to give me. But, it's just so exciting to see which direction this next stage of our lives is headed!

So, since everyone else has an opinion, I want to hear yours! Vote at my top sidebar, and let me know what YOU think...will we be having a little boy or a little girl?

Baby Brain!

So, I definitely have BABY BRAIN! Now that I can feel our little one, it's so much more fun and exciting on a daily basis. I just can't wait to not only have this little one here with us, but to find out the gender THIS MONDAY! :) :) :)

Now that we are so close to finding out...boy or girl?...I am thinking about decorating the nursery. I really do want this room to be something very calming. I've never been a fan of loud colors in a nursery, seems like a baby cries enough, let's not give them crazy colors that make them go even crazier!

This one is really fun and quirky - shabby chic.

This is my absolute favorite - and why you ask? It's the curtains dressing the actual crib. I just think that's perfect for a little girl. I grew up with a canopy bed, and if Pat won't let me have one, gosh darnet, my baby will have something like it ;)

PS - I've already picked out a chandalier for the room if we are having a girl!

This one has some nice colors in it too, but it's not overwhelming.

Yes, I'm thinking about nurseries, but there's one blog post from a friend that really is causing the baby brain. Please, especially if you are expecting, go check out Emily's baby story with her little gal, Lucy! It will make you cry, laugh and really get excited about your little one's arrival. I've always been so thankful for her advice and kind words at the beginning of my pregnancy - I can only imagine what kind of magical time she's living right now :)

Only 3 more half days of school left, so stoked!

20 week Baby Update
How Far Along: 20 Weeks
How Big is Baby: The size of a Banana (11 inches head to toe)
Weight Gain: About 8 pounds
Stretch Marks: None yet!
Maternity Clothes: Oh yes, much more comfortable. I just bought a maternity bathing suit for the summer.
Sleep: Just started to really get uncomfortable. I bought a smaller boppy pillow to place in between my legs at night, that has really helped my back pain. I'm still tossing and turning at night, though.
Best Moment This Week: It was really last week's moment, but feeling the baby move for the first time. No butterflies or bubble feelings for me, it literally feels like the baby is poking me from the inside.
Food Cravings: More like drink cravings, really enjoying milk these days, along with a watermelon flavored Sprite from Sonic. YUM!
Gender: We will find out in one week! June 13th - CAN.NOT.WAIT!
Movement: Definitely there and fast! Always a cool feeling :)
Belly Button In or Out: Definitely not as big as it was before, who knows, I could have an outty by the end of this...YUCK!
What I Miss: Being able to sleep on my back
What I'm Looking Forward To: Finding out the gender of our baby so we can share the name and start DECORATING :) I feel so behind!
Milestone: I'm halfway through this pregnancy! It's crunch time, people!
Weekly Wisdom: I felt really insecure about the amount of weight I was gaining along with how big I was getting so early on. Just own your body and realize there just isn't anything you can do about it, your body is going to do what it has to do to create your perfect baby! I am getting very excited!

I'm in the last week of school with kids, and then one more week of professional development. I am beyond ready for summer break.

The Skinny

Ok, so I meant the "not so skinny"...I'll be 20 weeks tomorrow, and I already look like I'm carrying a bowling ball under my shirt! Am I having twins, no...but I'm definitely growing pretty quickly.

So, don't be surprised if by the end of this whole pregnancy my bowling ball becomes an oversized beach ball. That very well might happen!!!

I'm feeling really good, my migraines have definitely lessened, but I am no longer able to sleep on my back. It's just too uncomfortable...and I'm a back sleeper...oh how I miss it! I bought a smaller boppy pillow to put in between my legs to keep my back settled and me a little more comfortable at night.

I also found a maternity bathing suit - I'm not that impressed, but it will do. And no, there's no way you're going to see me in THAT! HA!

So, I know my Mom will shutter over the fact that I'm showing you these next two pictures...but here is the nursery BEFORE. This is what we have to work with.

In the next week and a half we will find out the sex of our little one, and we are so excited to find out and begin the decorating process!

Here is the dresser and mirror, both found at Goodwill, that we will re-finish before the baby comes...but it's really cut down on the cost of major furniture needed for this room, so I'm excited about that.

AFTER pictures are certainly coming this summer, but I thought I'd give you a little taste of what we have to work with. Sorry, Mom! ;)

Week 19

Happy Memorial Day weekend to all of you! Whew! It's been quite the whirlwind these past two months - this is the first weekend we've really had that was completely and utterly FREE! So excited to do a whole lot of nothin'!

Emily, a lovely co-worker of mine, suggested this great pregnancy book, that is a little out of the ordinary. It's not your typical "What To Expect When You're Expecting" type of read. The author is a straight up English comedian practically, and really tells it like it is. I absolutely LOVE it!

Just to give you an idea of how she writes, here's a little quote about her 19th week (exactly where I am in my pregnancy!).

"Quite often on the street I suddenly find myself rubbing my stomach in the unselfconscius way men scratch their scrotum. And I don't care who sees me. My stomach sticks way out in front and people ask, "When are you due?" and I ay, "August," and they look at me as if I've got a buffalo up my dress. Their next question is usually "Is it twins?"
That was perfect for me when I was so insecure about showing so early. I think I've learned to embrace it and just let the cards fall where they may. Everybody is different.

I've also had moments throughout my pregnancy so far where I feel like I'm going to ROCK at giving birth - I can majorly kick some booty during labor. That's right! Then the next day, I'm back to acting like a scared little baby about the whole thing. Ah, the rollercoaster of emotions!

Last night, Pat and I went to a local, small Italian restaurant - perfect food - and then we went to see Bridesmaids. HI-LAR-IOUS! I'm tellin' ya, the dry humor and the similarities that all of us gals can relate to with our dear friends was spot on. The guys loved it too because they saw that women can be just as disgusting and funny when they are hanging out with other girlfriends!

Well, like I said, I'm off to do a whole lot of nothin'! We have a few friends coming over on Monday for some major grilling action and I'm hoping to grab some flowers and hanging plants to get some more color in front of the house.

As far as knowing the sex of the baby yet - I'm scheduled for the ultrasound on June 13th - but I'm so impatient, I'm going to see if there are any cancellations for an earlier time next week ;) I can't wait to find out!!!

The Mom-To-Be Card

As I send out a belated Happy Mother's Day to you all, I am excited to show you what we bought yesterday!

I definitely played the "Mother-To-Be" card yesterday...hardcore! The husband caved :) As my Mom said: "Pat...you're a wuss!" HA!

I've been wanting this chandalier from Ikea for a long time now to put in our kitchen. A grand total of $39.99 did this to our kitchen!

It really spruces it up, doesn't it!? Now the hubby and I are seriously considering re-doing our kitchen before the little one arrives. We're talkin' granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and some countri-fied backsplash. Can't wait to share with you when we start!

The Mom-To-Be card also got me our second 9-ft umbrella that we've been wanting for our deck. Our deck is high, so it gets pretty hot and sunny up there. These two umbrellas will certainly do the trick!
